Time Travelers and History Detectives Clubs:
These two children's programs each meet the first Thursday of the month. The History Detectives is for pre-school children and meets at 10:15 am. The Detectives meet at 6:30 pm. Children will learn about their local history through songs, games, activities, and interpretive performances. Attendance is free.

Are you interested in researching your family history? Join retired history teacher and family researcher, Doug Kolbe, as he shows you how to navigate the Ancestry.com website. FREE for SCHS members, $2 per person for non-members.
Memorial Day Weekend Hours: the History Center will be open 10am until 3 pm and Village Tours will be offered on Saturday, May 25th. There will be no tours offered Sunday and Monday, and the History Center will also be closed Sunday and Monday. Have a safe weekend and remember those who proudly served on our behalf.

Car Wash Fundraiser, noon until 3 pm
Join the Willow Creek Historical Society Leadership Group as they help us to fundraise with a car wash. Your car will be washed and vacuumed for only $5 per car and all proceeds benefit SCHS. Donations are also appreciated!

This month it is all about gardening. Children will help to plant the garden located by the cabin in the Village. There might even be some time for old fashioned games! Participation is FREE.

Join us as we take a look at Steele County's oldest community. The discussion will be led by historian, John Gross. FREE for SCHS members and $2 per person for non-members.

Dr. Patrick Greenwood- Dr. Twiford at the Battle of Gettysburg
As we commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg we'll learn about Willis Twiford, M. D., Civil War surgeon, legislator, and farmer-doctor who practiced in Steele County.
Our presenter, Patrick Greenwood, M.D., was born in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School, Saint Olaf College with a BA in Economics, the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and a three-year Family Medicine Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and by the American Board of Insurance Medicine. From 1975-2005, he practiced family medicine and emergency medicine at the Owatonna Clinic, now Mayo Clinic Health System-Owatonna. He served two terms as chief of staff at Owatonna Hospital, one term as President of the Owatonna Clinic and years later as Medical Director for Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System from 2002 to 2005. He was also Medical Director for Federated Insurance Company in Owatonna from 1991 to 2005. He is a published author and is writing books about the physicians who served the Owatonna, from its beginning through the greatest generation. FREE for SCHS members, $2 per person for non-members.

Enjoy an evening of cowboy fare (shredded pork, calico beans, and more!) and entertainment with singing cowboy, Lonesome Ron, during our Chuckwagon Supper. Tickets ($12) are required, and space is limited. To reserve your tickets, please call our office at 451-1420.

27th Annual Extravaganza
Our largest event of the year! Music, food, historic demonstrations, blacksmithing, leather working, woodworking, old-time gas engines, handwork demonstrations, an antique tractor show and parade, horse-drawn rides, OZ Printing Press, and more await you during this family day of historically related fun! The Old West Regulators will be on hand to entertain you and take you back to the "old west". In the History Center shop for unique treasures at the Artisan Market that features our talented Gift Shop vendors. All Village buildings are open to enjoy. FREE admission, donations are appreciated.

Mike Eckers presents the movie From Wasioja to Washington
In 2011, to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, a group of volunteers put together a weekend of Civil War re-enactments. This movie chronicles the story of the troops from Wasioja, MN that served in the Civil War and also re-caps the event in June of 2011. The "Friends of Wasioja" will be presenting another weekend of Civil War activities June 15th and 16th this year. For more information go to: www.civilwarmn.com. August 13-18, 2013, Village of Yesteryear and History Center
Steele County FREE Fair
Visit the Village from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, August 14th, and then from noon till 9 p.m. each day, except Sunday when hours are noon till 6 p.m. This is Minnesota's largest county fair! The Village will feature FREE local entertainment, and don't forget to stop by and have an old-fashioned float with your choice of Henry Weinhard's soda and lots of ice cream! FREE admission to all buildings, but a donation of $1 per person is appreciated at the Dunnell House. The History Center will also be open the same hours as the Village. Admission is $2 per person, Children 12 and under are FREE.

Uncle Sam's New Deal, Exhibit Debut 10 am
A traveling exhibit from the Minnesota Historical Society, this exhibit will also feature local programming about how the "New Deal" affected life in Steele County. With the Great Depression underway, this historic legislation led to the creation of jobs and projects that are still part of our communities today.

Christmas in the Village: A Victorian Christmas awaits you at the Village of Yesteryear! Horse-drawn sleigh rides, Santa and Mrs. Claus, our famous fancy cookie sale, music, and more! Children can decorate cookies and make a Christmas "cracker" to take home. Wassail is served in General Store, and the Dunnell House is lavishly decorated for the holidays. In the History Center shop our beautiful Artisan Market for your holiday gift-giving with our Gift Shop vendors. FREE admission, but donations are appreciated.
