Built in 1984 to represent a farm implement dealership the building is named Buxton-McClintock, prop., to honor one of the earliest farm machinery businesses here, founded by John E. Buxton in 1865, and his son, C.I. Buxton, who was pivotal in creation of Federated Insurance Companies, a national firm and a major Owatonna employer. Inside are tools, Gandy measuring wheel, Owatonna brand windrower, plus many examples of early farming equipment.
Since Owatonna was once called the “Butter Capital of the World,” it’s appropriate to exhibit a number of items from Steele County creameries. The county had more than 20 creameries at its zenith; the last one at Hope is still in operation.
