Description Portrait of Alfred Bennett Cornell who founded Owatonna with W.F. Pettit in July 1854. Cornell constructed the first log house within the city limits in 1854, and was responsible for hiring Edward Doud to plat the town site, donating land for Central Park and for the first schoolhouse in 1855. In 1856 he founded the first newspaper in Owatonna, The Watchman & Register. Served as sutler to Minnesota First Regiment in the Civil War. Left Owatonna in December 1867 for Missouri, where he died May 19, 1899 in Alton, Iowa.
