This old-fashioned general store recalls the days prior to packaged goods with the items behind the counter. Customers could also find dry goods and small appliances, sewing items, toys, as well as getting shoes repaired. At the rear is a meat market which exhibits cutting utensils and the awdust on the floor common to all meat markets, which were usually separate shops from “groceries.”
This addition to the General Store houses the complete post office with mail boxes, service window and office equipment of the village of Meriden, pre-dating 1917. Over the years the post office was located in various places - a grocery store, the pool hall/barbershop and the home of Mrs. Anna Drache, who was postmistress from 1928-1968.
